The Cheese Cavern was conceived as an immersive space that transforms the constraints of a small site into opportunities for discovery and delight. This design celebrates the existing features and introduces unexpected moments for visitors, creating an architectural experience that is both surprising and engaging.
Design Statement
Inspired by the iconic St. Louis Gateway Arch, The Cheese Cavern mimics the form of its surrounding campus, utilizing curved structures to create a dynamic presence. The design plays with perspectives, presenting visitors from different directions with distinct impressions—a single curved facade from the east and a striking two-story facade from the west.
Spatial Experience Statement
As visitors enter from the west side, they are drawn into a descending ramp that reveals an underground world. This lower level houses a bar, sales area, and back-of-house functions, creating a layered experience where each descent opens up new spaces and elements for discovery.
Atmosphere of Delight Statement
The Cheese Cavern embraces an atmosphere of unexpected delight, where constrained space becomes an asset. The layout and design amplify moments of surprise, using shifts in height, lighting, and spatial flow to transform each visitor’s journey into a series of memorable experiences.
