Inspired by the rich ecological systems of the Mississippi River, The Swamp Social Pavilion is designed as a communal space along the Baton Rouge riverfront in collaboration with Baton Roots Community Farm. This pavilion addresses the area’s food desert and aims to foster community connections through sustainable, flood-responsive design.
Design Statement
Drawing inspiration from the natural forms of Mississippi River sandbars, The Swamp Social Pavilion mirrors the intricate relationships between the river, delta, levee, and spillway systems. The pavilion’s structure is intentionally shaped to reflect these natural elements, creating a space that resonates with the river’s dynamic landscape.
Environmental Response Statement
Integrated into the design is a step garden terrace with natural drainage and flood-mitigation techniques, crafted to support Baton Roots' mission of providing fresh, accessible produce. This terrace responds to the site's environmental challenges, encouraging sustainable interaction with the riverfront landscape.
Representation Statement
The technical drawings—floor plan, sections, elevation, and site plan—articulate the pavilion’s spatial layout, environmental considerations, and structural relationship to the surrounding ecosystem. Each drawing communicates the pavilion’s balance of form and function, encapsulating the synergy between architecture and nature.
